If a candidate dies during his or her campaign?

My 11 yr old posed this question and I wasn't sure of the answer. He asked if a presidential candidate was to suddenly get sick and die, what happens to the campaign? Does the other candidate continue to run unopposed? If a candidate dies during his or her campaign?
That already happened, Robert Kennedy was shot and killed campaigning. I am sure that Hillary Clinton would have the support of the whole democratic party. If it was John McCain it would probably be Romney. If a candidate dies during his or her campaign?
That would probably be up to the Party in question............

Each party has its own protocol for this scenario, but in neither case does the running mate automatically take over the ticket. If John McCain were to die before the election, the rules of the Republican Party authorize the Republican National Committee to fill the vacancy, either by reconvening a national convention or by having RNC state representatives vote. The new nominee must receive a majority vote to officially become the party candidate. If Barack Obama were to die before the election, the Democratic Party's charter and bylaws state that responsibility for filling that vacancy would fall to the Democratic National Committee, but the rules do not specify how exactly the DNC would go about doing that. (Congress could also pass a special statute and push back Election Day, giving the dead candidate's party time to regroup.)

When I was 11 I was thinking about aliens and Power Rangers. These are the kind of questions I ask now. But to answer your question, ';For both parties, if either candidate were to die currently (after official nomination but before election), their conventions would reconvene and the delegates would select a new candidate.'; - justagirl
dont know the rules off hand , never happened. Guess the people of the party would approve the VP. In Missouri when the candidate died the wife took over and the opponent stepped down. Bye the way the opponent went on to save America when we got attacked
The way it runs is this: if the president dies, the vice president takes office- if the vice president takes office then the speaker of the house takes office
I think the surviving VP would have to pick a VP replacement.Since they would assume the role of the Presidential nominee.
No, the party would choose another candidate. The VP can't choose anyone--since they are not the VP yet.
Another stupid question. No, they take the winning dead guy to his new office. Jesus Christ!
