During the presidential campaign, with Senators McCain and Obama running, who was doing their job for 2 years?

Apparently, their jobs are so important that they really are ';on hold'; for the duration, with pay! I want that job!! I understand that both men missed the majority of the congressional voting during that time. Who will be taking President elect Obama's senate seat?During the presidential campaign, with Senators McCain and Obama running, who was doing their job for 2 years?
These men can still vote..they have fellow Senators who vote for them even if they are not *physically* in the building

I have seen videos of a almost empty Senate and House when they

vote and just a few Senators and Congressmen are jumping all over

the place and voting for their fellow Democrats or Republicans

I have been to see Congress in SESSION and it was disappointing

as these men were either gone, sleeping, reading the paper, or

on their cell phones or computer..nobody listens to the speeches..

Senators, Governors, and Representatives ALWAYS seem to have enough time to RUN FOR PRESIDENT, but they make it back to congress, or their home state to vote and pass legislation that will affect their run at the presidency. That happens in BOTH major parties, and I suspect in the others too.
I have said this for years. Congressional sessions are way to long. They only create more laws. They should go to Washington, get the people's business done and then go home. Of course since they are an elite governing class this will not happen.
Did you miss the part where McCain SUSPENDED his campiagn to go work on the ';bail out';?

Obama kept campaigning and said.... 'call me if you need me'. (Wow.. what leadership!)
The other 98 Senators. Obama's replacement? Ask the Governor of Illinois...
Whoever the Governor of Illinois chooses.
Goes to show how hard their job is as senators ha ha
