The end result would be things not getting done. As America has sub-urbanized, things have become more spread out. I currently live 5 miles from work, used to live 30. That would be about 3 hours a day just going back and forth to work. Any store is 3 miles, another 2 hour round trip and hope nothing melts. Walking when expedient is not a bad idea, but more efficient transportation methods are much easier to push for. A well laid out public transportation system is very effective and bicycle paths/lanes do encourage cycling if the rider feels safe (painting a white line on the road and posting a sign does not ensure safety on a busy road). Also the slogan from the seventies still holds true - carpooling saves gas. One car hauling four people uses far less fuel than four cars hauling one person. What impact could a nationwide walk not drive campaign have ?
I'd like to see that. What fun it would be to watch people stumbling along the sidewalk with their newly purchased patio set - table, four chairs, umbrella - strapped to their back. And, the little lady carrying home sixteen bags of groceries. You and junior trudging along carrying the mattress and boxspring for his room. Or, hefting that four-seater sofa home from the furniture store. Yes, I'd be much amused by the antics of people as they tried to live life on foot. If you decide to give it a try in your community, let us all know. We can come watch.
