Hello.
I'm just wondering what three things did the Italian Campaign do that contributed to the Allies' victory?
I'm thinking the fall of Mussolini and that Italy was taken out of the war was one.
Thanks a bunch. What three things did the Italian Campaign do?
It provided a portal for the invasion of southern Europe.
It enabled the 12th USAAF and 15th USAAF to establish airbases to continue the airborne offensive from south and westerly directions. What three things did the Italian Campaign do?
The Germans were fighting the Russians, and the UK (although the D-Day invasion came a bit later). The Italian campaign opened up a third front, which was a big drain on resources.
During the campaign, the Italians surrendered, with took one of Germany's biggest allies out of the war. Not that they ever did much fighting, but still.... having the Italians out made taking Italy easier, although it was still a very tough slog.
It also kept the focus away from the preparations for the D-Day invasion. The Germans figured the third front would open in France, but they could never be sure that some of the military activity in the UK was not destined for Germany, or southern France to link up with the armies in Italy, or whatever. The Allies also learned some techniques that would come in handy later, like ';mouse holing,'; where you would go house to house in a street by making holes in the walls between houses, rather than going out in the street.
It also gave the Allies confidence that they could fight. E.g., the Canadians had been in the UK waiting to get into the war. Other than Dieppe, their first Army experience fighting as a Division in WWII was in Sicily and then Italy. The lessons learned made the D-Day invasion and subsequent fighting work much better.
